They are in charge of hiring people, setting the hours of work, overseeing the payroll, developing marketing plans, etc. A proprietor usually has little to do with any of these. However, they still have a responsibility towards their business and its success.

People that own a business have to worry about being a CEO, chairing meetings, directing the financial budget, leading meetings, paying employees, etc. While a proprietor does not have all of these responsibilities, they still have control over their business. People who choose to own their own company have to prepare for the unexpected. They have to figure out what it is going to cost to run the business and how much money they can make. There may be many little things that need to be done before the sale can happen. They have to decide if they can take the time off, what would it take to go ahead with the sale, etc.

If a person decides to turn into a proprietor, they have to have all of the knowledge and experience that they need to succeed in owning a successful business. Since a proprietorship is something that one has to work at, they have to be prepared to work hard at whatever they decide to start. In the beginning, they may be surprised that it does not work out as they had hoped.

Being a proprietor is not the same as owning a business. A proprietor is someone who takes charge and manages a business by themselves. They do not own the business, but they are responsible for it.
